The Fiat 500, which hits showrooms in January, will rely on customization to attract potential buyers. Although most of the work, such as exterior color and seat choices will be handled at the plant, Fiat’s dealers – who are also Chrysler dealers – will shoulder some of the work in providing consumer choices. Mopar Chief Executive Pietro Gorlier said he is already well underway to stock dealers with the parts and packages they will need to respond.

“Accessories and options are the perfect marriage,” Gorlier said. “Whatever is an option at the plant I must have as an accessory at the dealer.”

Dealers will offer striping and graphic packages such as overlaying an Italian or American flag on the car. Shoppers will also have the chance to select from six different wheels or even customized their key fob. Dealers will also have the ability to install different seats which will be key in the future when they beginning selling used Fiats.

“It (customization) never has to stop,” Gorlier said.

Chrysler and Fiat join the growing list of auto makers who are trying to offer more features to not only attract customers but also increase the final purchase price. Consumers are now spending an average $1,000 more to add some extra bling to their cars and trucks.

Laura Soave, CEO of Fiat in North America, says potential buyers of the 500 aren’t older folks who remember Fiat’s former U.S. vehicles as gorgeous but troublesome. Fiat quit the U.S. market after the 1983 model year.

The new Fiat 500′s prospects, she says, will be younger hipsters. “It’ll be seen as a new brand, a cool Italian brand.” And when they research the 500, “They’ll see it’s a worldwide icon,” helping pre-sell them on the car.

The U.S. 500 will come in three trim levels — the entry-level Pop, the Sport and the Lounge (yes). Changes to the European-spec 500 for the U.S. market include:

• Suspension modifications to handle U.S. roads, often rougher than those in Europe.
• Upgraded heating and air conditioning for the temperature extremes in the U.S.
• A six-speed automatic transmission, not available in Europe, but expected to account for 60% to 70% of U.S. sales.
• A larger, 10.5-gallon gas tank.
• Seats tailored for long-distance comfort. “We drive a lot farther in the U.S.,” Soave says.

The car will be built in Mexico, but the 1.4-liter, 100 hp. engine will be made in the U.S.

Soave says that in the second half of 2011 Fiat will add a convertible version of the 500 and in 2012 will bring in to the U.S. the high-performance Abarth model, the 500′s equivalent of a Mini John Cooper Works edition. Also, coming in late 2012 will be an electric 500.

Chrysler has chosen four Bay State dealers to carry its new Fiat 500, the first of the Italian brand’s models sold in America since 1983. “The Fiat 500 has always been the right car at the right time,” Laura Soave of Fiat said yesterday as Chrysler unveiled the $15,500 subcompact at the Los Angeles International Auto Show. Chrysler, which Fiat purchased out of bankruptcy last year, also named 130 U.S. dealers to carry the new brand.

The Massachusetts car sellers awarded franchises include Peter Catenese (Fiat of Norwood), Herb Chambers (Fiat of Worcester), Brian Kelly (Fiat of Peabody) and Joe Laham (Fiat of Cape Cod). Chambers said he expects to begin taking orders for the new car next month at his Millbury/Worcester Chrysler dealership, opening a separate Fiat showroom there next spring. “I think the Fiat 500 is a good-looking automobile that will fit into our line-up quite well,” he said.
